ABOUT EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED THERAPY FOR COUPLES AND FAMILIES

EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) is a highly empirically validated approach that helps couples to shift destructive, repeating negative patterns in their relationship and achieve deeper intimacy, trust, and relationship satisfaction. Pioneered by Canadian researcher Dr. Sue Johnson, EFT’s proven success rate is based in extensive research demonstrating that the majority of couple distress results from the breakdown emotional safety and security in the connection between partners.

EFT therapists are highly trained to first help partners work together to identify and overcome the automatic, negative cycles of interaction that arise from sustained emotional hurt and misunderstanding, and corrode the couple’s ability to trust in a secure connection.  Once the couple’s negative pattern of communication has been identified and overcome, EFT supports couples in developing new and effective ways to communicate, listen to one another and meet each others’ needs. From this place of increased security and emotional safety, partners begin to reconnect productively, and work to renew vitality, connection, and intimacy in their relationship.
