Step 2 of EFT:

Tracking the Reactive Negative Cycle

Presented by:
Sam Jinich, Ph. D., Certified EFT Trainer

SUBJECT:
It is natural for EFT therapists to want to explore, access and uncover the deeper attachment-related emotions and meaning that often lies hidden beneath the couple’s repetitive conflict (Step 3 of EFT). Getting to the richer emotional material is what typically draws us to this model. In our desire to “do EFT”, we often rush past the earlier assessment steps of the EFT map hoping to get to “the heart of the matter.” In this presentation, Sam will guide us through an explanation of the importance of taking our time in Step 2 to patiently explore the various aspects of the reactive cycle. We will focus on the key interventions and moves used during this step to clarify the positions of each partner in the negative cycle and to make sense of their intrapsychic and interpersonal responses (Johnson, 2004).

Participants will have opportunities to practice

1) tracking and making sense of the couple’s cycle,

2) introducing the idea of a repetitive negative cycle and

3) reframing the cycle in attachment terms.

We will offer time for Q & A followed by an opportunity to practice EFT interventions and attunement skills.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

1. Organize and explore relational distress and negative patterns of interaction as a repetitive reactive cycle.

2. Practice using evocative inquiry and reflections to track the negative cycle.

3. Focus on the intrapsychic and interpersonal responses of the couple and make meaningful connections that validate the reactive experience of each partner.

4. Recognize and practice clinical techniques and skills used in step 2 of EFT such as tracking the negative cycle, empathic attunement, reflecting the clients secondary emotions, evoking emotions, validating their reactive experience and reframing their conflict in attachment terms.

While NCCEFT works to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there will be occasional issues which will require intervention and/or action on the part of NCCEFT. This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such complaints.

When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken:

1. If the complaint concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the complaint will be asked to put his/her comments in written format. The CE Program Director will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the aggrieved individual.

2. If the complaint concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the CE Program Director will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action during a workshop or conference, the CE Program Director or his/her representative will:

a. attempt to rectify the situation, and/or

b. provide a credit for a subsequent presentation, in the event of a program having an attendance fee or

c. provide a partial or full refund of the registration fee, in the event of a program having an attendance fee.

Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the aggrieved individual.

3. If the grievance concerns the business practices of the NCCEFT CE program in a specific regard, the CE Program Director or Administrator will attempt to arbitrate.

REFUND AND ATTENDANCE POLICY:

In the event that a program presentation has an attendance fee, CANCELLATIONS are subject to a $50.00 processing fee and must be received 14 days prior to be eligible for a refund.
