Leading, Being Led, Walking Beside: Collaboration with the Couple in EFT

Presented by:

 Sarah Ackerman LMFT, Certified EFT Therapist and Supervisor

Jamie Bachman LCSW, Certified EFT Therapist and Supervisor

SUBJECT:

Throughout our work with Emotionally Focused Therapy, we find ourselves naturally and instinctively shifting through three ways of being with couples. At times it feels we are leading them down a particular path. At other times we seek to stand right by their side as they explore their internal experience. And sometimes we find ourselves letting them lead the way into new territory. These shifts in our stance toward members of our couple represent key clinical decision points about how best to support our couples in their journey. And for many of us, one or more of these stances feel like an integral part of who we are as therapists.

In this meeting, we will explore these stances, and engage our collective curiosity about which we choose and when. Through discussion, video review, and small group exercises, we will increase our consciousness about these ways of being with couples and develop clarity about how each of these stances are a vital part of our work. Through Self of Therapist work, we will explore which of these feel like our most comfortable “go-to” ways of being, and which feel less a part of our repertoire. We will practice identifying the markers for what stance is called for, and how to engage couples from different stances. We hope participants will leave with more clarity and confidence about each of these ways of being with clients, and how they fit into our EFT journey!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this offering, participants will be able to:

  • Identify three different therapist stances we use in EFT in relation to the couple: leading, walking beside, and following;
  • Describe optimal and non-optimal uses of these stances within the steps and stages of EFT;
  • Through Self-of-Therapist work, identify which of these three feel most and least comfortable to them;
  • Describe common markers for the need to shift from stance to stance within the steps.

NCCEFT will comply with all legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants.  The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be the responsibility of the CPA PAS CE Program Director in consultation with the Board of Directors (Steering Committee).

While NCCEFT works to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there will be occasional issues which will require intervention and/or action on the part of NCCEFT. This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such complaints.

When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken:

1. If the complaint concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the complaint will be asked to put his/her comments in written format. The CE Program Director will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the aggrieved individual.

2. If the complaint concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the CE Program Director will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action during a workshop or conference, the CE Program Director or his/her representative will:

a. attempt to rectify the situation, and/or

b. provide a credit for a subsequent presentation, in the event of a program having an attendance fee or

c. provide a partial or full refund of the registration fee, in the event of a program having an attendance fee.

Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the aggrieved individual.

3. If the grievance concerns the business practices of the NCCEFT CE program in a specific regard, the CE Program Director or Administrator will attempt to arbitrate.

REFUND AND ATTENDANCE POLICY:
