DESCRIPTION:
Day One: EFIT and Trauma — Transforming Trauma with Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy
On the first day of this two day training, Dr. Leanne Campbell offers a clear, compassionate, and practitioner-ready roadmap for using Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) to transform the impacts of trauma and kick-start the organic growth process. EFIT is an attachment-based, humanistic, experiential, systemic approach that helps clinicians understand trauma through the lens of bonding needs, emotion regulation, and working models of self and other.
Participants will learn how an attachment frame and an emotion focus make EFIT especially suited for working with diverse trauma presentations (including cumulative/work-related trauma, single-incident trauma, traumatic loss, complex/developmental trauma). You’ll be guided through EFIT’s step-by-step three-stage map and its “five-move set” of interventions—the dance of attunement, the EFIT Tango—to help you create focused, corrective emotional experiences that build safety, coherence, self-compassion, and a stronger, more resilient sense of self.
Day Two: EFIT and Grief — Moving Through Loss and Grief into Growth and Resilience with Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT)
Attachment theory and science offer a guide to understanding love and loss. On the second day of this training Dr. Leanne Campbell offers a clear, compassionate, and practitioner-ready roadmap for using Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) to work with grief and loss as an organic attachment-based process.
With loss comes change. At times, this involves a profound disruption of the attachment system. When bonds are broken, whether through death, separation, or relational disconnection, the emotional system reorganizes around yearning, protest, despair, and, at times, emotional constriction or shutdown. Attachment science offers a guide for making sense of such reactions in context. EFIT provides a structured and experiential approach to help clients process, integrate, and transform these responses.
Loss can emerge in various forms, those highlighted above, as well as other types of primary and secondary losses that might similarly disrupt the attachment system and/or force a shift in identity. Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) offers a method and a map for helping clients navigate various kinds of losses.
Grounded in attachment science and extending the well-established lineage of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), EFIT allows clinicians a guide to help clients move beyond symptom management toward deep emotional processing and reorganization. Using EFIT’s three-stage map of change and its five-move intervention sequence—the EFIT Tango, therapists are guided in working moment-by-moment with grief-related emotional experience.
Participants will learn how to conceptualize grief through an attachment lens, recognize how trauma and attachment injuries can complicate mourning, and use experiential interventions to help clients move from disorganization and aloneness toward integration, meaning, and continued connection.
This training emphasizes how the therapeutic relationship is central in offering a safe haven and secure base where grief can be experienced, expressed, and transformed in ways that restore flexibility, coherence, and resilience – whether clients are successfully navigating the emotional landscape of loss, on their own timelines and prescribed guidelines, or whether they might be stuck and constricted. The attachment-based experiential assessment guides the process and the role of the therapist.
Note. This course qualifies for the short course requirement for EFIT certification (see www.iceeft.com for further details regarding certification).
Teaching format: Step-by-step teaching supported by lectures, case examples, and in-session video-based learning.
Prerequisites: None required. Recommended preparation includes EFT externship, EFIT Essentials, or Fundamentals of EFT.
Recommended readings: Attachment Theory in Practice (Johnson, 2019); A Primer for Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) (Johnson & Campbell, 2022); Emotionally Focused Therapy for Trauma (Johnson & Campbell, 2026).
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Day One: EFIT and Trauma
By the end of the day, participants will be able to:
-
Describe trauma and its impacts through an attachment perspective, including emotion dysregulation and protective strategies.
-
Create and maintain a safe haven secure base alliance that promotes exploration, discovery and growth, with attention to when to “use ourselves and when to remove ourselves” with the Tango as our guide.
-
Conduct an experiential attachment-based assessment and “chart the course” with attention to pacing and the C.A.R.E. frame (context, attachment, relationship/therapeutic alliance, and emotion).
-
Apply the EFIT Tango across the three-stage process, with ongoing attention to assessment and pacing as therapy progresses.
-
Identify and work with blocks (e.g., shame, overwhelm) with careful pacing and “window of tolerance/capacity” sensitivity.
-
Consolidate, integrate and celebrate therapeutic gains with the aim of promoting ongoing growth and resilience
Day Two: EFIT and Grief
By the End of the Day, Participants Will Be Able To:
-
Describe grief as an attachment-based process, including how loss disrupts bonding, safety, and emotional organization.
-
Differentiate grief presentations, including acute grief, traumatic loss, and grief complicated by various factors such as attachment injuries or shame.
-
Explain common emotional patterns in grief, including protest, longing, despair, numbness, and disconnection.
-
Conduct an experiential, attachment-based assessment using the C.A.R.E. frame (context, attachment, relationship/therapeutic alliance, emotion).
-
Apply the EFIT three-stage map to grief work, from stabilization and access to integration and meaning-making.
-
Use the EFIT Tango to process grief in real time, including accessing core emotional experience and organizing attachment meaning.
-
Identify and work with blocks to grief processing, including shame, emotional constriction, avoidance, and overwhelm, with attention to pacing and window of tolerance/capacity.
-
Facilitate corrective emotional experiences that support integration of loss, transformation of attachment responses, and restoration of resilience and connection.
